Pyrex Storage: 7 Reasons Why It’s Better Than Plastic – Part 3
Reason #7: Pyrex Does Not Harbor Deadly Bacteria
Plastic can scratch easily. Sometimes scratches can occur during cleaning, or when stirring with a metal spoon. These scratches are difficult to get clean and can turn into hiding places for harmful bacteria. This is why experts recommend not using reusable plastic containers to store raw chicken or other meats.
Again, because Pyrex storage bowls are non-porous, there is no chance of bacteria seeping into a scratch. I can store raw chicken in our Pyrex containers without fear of contamination. In fact, we often marinate steak and chicken for hours in our Pyrex storage containers before our backyard barbecues in the summer.
Conclusion
So, as you can see, Pyrex has a lot of advantages over plastic. It does not discolor, warp, or leak harmful BPA and other chemicals into our food. It also freezer safe, and can be used in the oven. Since it’s glass, it can be used for storing raw meat without fear of harmful bacteria getting into the plastic… and although it’s made of glass, it’s borosilicate glass which is tough enough to be dropped (from a few feet) without breaking.
Any downsides?
I only have one to report… I wish that the sides of the bowls were tapered a bit more to allow better “nesting” when not in use. The sides of most of these bowls are fairly straight, and although you can stack the bowls a little, they don’t really fit very well. But, that is my only gripe and it’s a minor one… certainly not enough to dissuade me from purchasing more of these bowls.
All in all, our Pyrex storage containers have changed the way we cook, store and reheat food. Since the dishes will last virtually forever, we feel like we are contributing less waste to the environment… and since there is no chemical leakage from our Pyrex storage, we feel like we are treating ourselves better too.
