Pyrex Storage: 7 Reasons Why It’s Better Than Plastic – Part 2
Reason #4: Pyrex is Freezer Safe
Plastic bowls are legendary for cracking in lower temperatures. Most plastic food storage just isn’t designed to undergo the rigors of long term freezer storage. I can’t tell you how many times I have taken a plastic storage container out of the freezer to defrost for dinner, only to find later that it has leaked all over when it thawed.
Our Pyrex storage containers, on the other hand, are amazing in the freezer. In the winter, we make up large batches of chili and store the leftovers in the smaller Pyrex bowls in the freezer. These smaller “single serving” bowls of chili commonly go straight from the freezer to the microwave and we have never had a single problem in going from one extreme to the other.
Reason #5: Pyrex Storage Containers Are Tough
Plastic containers are very tough, and tend to bounce around a bit when you drop them. With Pyrex being glass, you would think that this is where plastic containers have Pyrex storage beat… but, for this comparison it’s only a tie.
Pyrex bowls are tough too. On the night that we received our new purchase of Pyrex storage containers, we loaded up the dishwasher and washed them all. Upon unloading the dishwasher, my heart sank as one of the larger bowls slipped from my clumsy fingers. It landed with a large “thunk” and didn’t break, or even crack. I hadn’t expected to test the ruggedness of these bowls so quickly, but it was nice to quickly find out how durable they are.
Reason #6: Pyrex is Oven Safe
Plastic storage containers, by their very nature, cannot be used in the oven. If you did, they would surely melt, virtually ruining your oven and probably release a cloud of toxic vapors throughout your home that would make it uninhabitable for at least a day or two.
There is no problem with Pyrex storage containers. They can go into the oven for hours (and often do when we bake lasagna) without worry. They can even go from the fridge to the oven, or from the freezer to the oven with no concerns of melting or cracking. We have the 11-cup Pyrex rectangular dish that is perfect for casseroles, lasagna, peach cobbler or whatever.
